Space Reconstruction from the Perspective of Landscape Architecture

We live in a material world where space and time are the precondition for all things to exist. From the ancient wasteland to today's highly humanized living environment, the relationship between human and nature has went through a process from opposition to gradual harmony. The layout and reconstruction of space highlights the development track of human civilization.

The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China put forward the goal of “Harmonious Coexistence between Human and Nature”, pointing out the development direction for the cause of landscape architecture. We set the theme of this year's IDEA-KING Competition as “Space Reconstruction from the Perspective of Landscape Architecture” in an effort to take on our historical responsibility.

Since the reform and opening up, there has been a large-scale population movement in China amid the development of economy. Great changes have taken place in the original urban and rural spatial structure. In the countryside, a large number of hollow villages have formed, and their original infrastructure and spatial layout have long lagged behind the times. As for cities, their original housing, transportation and public facilities can no longer meet the needs of the rapidly growing population. What’s worse, various urban diseases have emerged. Repositioning of urban functions, renovation of old cities, industrial new cities, new urban districts, and renewal of blocks are all new tasks faced by leaders and designers. Meanwhile, there is increasing demand for living environment that is closer to nature and conforms to the standards of environmental protection, ecological and garden city. As human's historical memory and spiritual home, various cultural spaces in urban and rural areas in need of reconstruction also starts to attract the attention of designers. With China's emphasis on the concept of sustainable development, integration of multiple regulations, ecological priority, equal emphasis on protection and development and comprehensive utilization of resources has become the dominant direction of future development. In making landscape planning, we must go beyond the traditional mode and actively participate in the land space planning and the construction of natural and cultural landscape.

Such great change is both a challenge and an opportunity for every designer. Space reconstruction is a systematic project that needs collective wisdom to make it more scientific, timely and forward-looking. In order to establish a more livable living environment, we sincerely invite designers at home and abroad as well as college students to give full play to your intelligence to design an even better blueprint. Let's join hands to work even harder to realize the grand goal of “Building Beautiful China” as soon as possible!
